Outreach

I enjoy explaining how the brain learns to see to audiences outside the lab, most often in science slams: short, entertaining talks for a general audience. These talks are in German.

Interactive exhibit: EEG Mindball

Together with Bettina Hein, a former PhD student in our lab, I developed an EEG Mindball: an interactive exhibit in which visitors try to move a ball by producing a particular signal in their recorded EEG. It is modelled on an exhibit at the phaeno science centre in Wolfsburg and offers a hands-on introduction to brain signals. It has been shown at various events, such as the Hessen schafft Wissen exhibitions (for example at the Frankfurt Book Fair), the FIAS 20th anniversary, the Night of Science, and the FIAS booth at Frankfurt hat Hirn 2024.

Panel discussions

  • 20 years of FIAS, anniversary ceremony, December 2024. Panel discussion on the role of FIAS and of interdisciplinary research, from a PhD student’s perspective. Report

Organising

  • German Neuroscience Olympiad, national final in Frankfurt, since 2019. Outreach and press contact, grading coordination, computational tutorial. The winner goes on to the International Brain Bee.
  • Night of Science, the annual student-run science night on Goethe University’s Riedberg campus. Member of the organising team 2015 – 2018 and of the executive committee (Vorstand) in 2018, responsible for purchasing and for the concept of several booths.
  • Bernstein Network PhD Symposium “Transitions”, held at FIAS after the Bernstein Conference 2024. Co-organised with Jonas Elpelt and Lisa Haxel.
